Trusting the Process: Every little bit makes a difference

I can’t help but marvel at how unpredictable and beautifully chaotic this industry is. Stepping into the real world after years of training was both exhilarating and heavy hitting. There's been lots of days filled with excitement, but also some big ugly slumps that have tested my sanity. Through it all, I’ve been learning to trust the process and embrace the flow of life, and it has made more difference than I even realised was possible.

Embracing the Slumps

So I've realised: the acting industry moves in waves. This year, there were stretches of time when auditions were sparse (non existent), and I pretty much didn't move from my bed. I quickly realised that these slumps are not just big hurdles to overcome but also valuable periods for reflection and growth. After panicking for a while and going to a few therapy sessions, I learned to embrace these moments. They forced me to dig deeper into what brings me joy outside of acting and to put it simply, you can't have good without the bad. It's easy to feel guilty as a creative but that's a whole other blog post.

Mental health has become more and more important over the years and working on how we talk to ourselves and treat rejection as performers/creators is vital for a sustainable career.

Finding activities unrelated to the industry became essential for my mental health. Whether it's reading, beading necklaces, or binging too hot too handle (could argue it's career related), these experiences helped me reconnect with myself. They provided a sense of fulfilment that most auditions can't replicate, reminding me that my identity isn’t solely defined by my career. And believe it or not, focusing on the positive, the wins no matter how tiny they are makes MOUNTAINS of difference in the long run. Again, another whole blog post in itself.

The Power of Connections

In an industry as interconnected as acting, relationships are the most important part of your career. This year I’ve come to appreciate the importance of networking, even when it feels painfully awkward. What’s been surprising is that networking often happens in the most unexpected ways. It’s not just about slotting yourself into circles at industry events; it’s about genuine connections made through shared experiences, (a producer and I spent about 45 minutes talking about our medical issues and I bonded with her more than anyone else at the event.)

I’ve made friends, collaborated with fellow artists, and, importantly, cultivated relationships with those I didn’t initially see as key players in my career. My job as an usher at my local theatre turned out to be one of the best decisions I could've made (I wanted the job for years so I'm glad I pushed through.) My boss, who believed in my talent and work ethic, ended up connecting me with his agent. Insane. You never know who will be in a position to speak highly of you, so treat everyone you meet with kindness and respect. People are probably speaking about you the same way you speak highly about your friends and industry buddies which is GREAT but also ...so trippy... being perceived...anyway-

Unexpected Opportunities

It's crazy how seemingly random projects can lead to extraordinary opportunities. I’ve learned to follow my instincts and engage with projects that pique my interest, regardless of how they align with my main goals. Whether it was a quirky short film, a music video, or a gossip girl-esque vertical series (see image below), each experience has enriched my craft and expanded my network, even the experiences that SUCKED ( which lucky haven't been many.)

These experiences have not only helped me grow but have often led to surprising connections and opportunities. The more I engaged with different projects, the more I realise that each one has the potential to open doors you never knew existed.

Conclusion: Trusting the Journey

Going with the flow, a phrase that needs to be used more, in my opinion. Trusting the process means understanding that every low moment can lead to unexpected highs. It’s about finding joy in the little things, nurturing relationships, and remaining open to the beautiful unpredictability of life, baby steps make all the difference.

So, if you’re also navigating your first steps in this industry, please remember: embrace the slumps, explore passions outside of acting, and cherish the connections you make along the way. You never know where they might lead. Trust the journey, go with the flow, and watch how the universe conspires to support your dreams.
